If someone told you that you could scale a 150-foot cliff and shimmy across a wire suspension bridge 105 feet in the air like you’re Tom Cruise, you’d probably laugh in their face… I know I would.

Like, hello? You think I’m climbing cliffs in my free time?

Well, actually, yes. Yes I am, thanks to Quarry Trails Metro Park in Columbus, Ohio.

The park is home to the first urban via ferrata in the country, and it might just be the most thrilling, butt-clenching, heart-pounding free thing you can do anywhere in Central Ohio.

🧗 What Even Is a Via Ferrata?

“Via ferrata” is Italian for “iron path,” which sounds pretty metal (literally and figuratively). It’s a climbing route that uses embedded metal rungs, ladders, and permanently fixed cables so you can scale rocky cliff faces without needing to be a professional rock climber.

Basically, it turns you into a total badass… without needing a lifetime of mountaineering experience.

The Wildest Part? That Suspension Bridge 😱

While the entire route is incredible, stretching over 1,000 feet across a rock face that was once carved out for the quarry, there’s one feature that really makes it unforgettable: a 90-foot-long suspension bridge that hangs 105 feet over a pond.

You’re clipped in, of course, but you’re essentially walking a high wire/tightrope with only air between you and the water below. Yes, it’s terrifying. Yes, a little bit of pee might come out.

But that’s livin’, baby!

Plus It’s Totally Free!

No catch, no fine print. If you meet the physical requirements and register online, you can sign up for a totally free via ferrata experience through the Metro Parks.

It’s available to anyone 14 and older, so long as you:

  • Weigh between 88 and 265 pounds
  • Are at least 5 feet tall
  • Have an adult with you if you’re under 18

The route usually takes about 90 minutes to complete from start to finish. And yes, there are trained staff and safety equipment provided.

👇 Quick FAQs (So You Know What You’re Getting Into)

How long does it take?

The route takes about 90 minutes from start to finish, but can vary depending on your group’s speed and how many “this is insane” breaks you take.

What should I expect?

Expect stunning views, horizontal climbing with a bit of vertical challenge, and one truly wild moment on the suspension bridge.

Who should do this?

If you’re physically able, not afraid of heights, and have decent upper body strength, you’re good to go. Not ideal for folks with vertigo, joint issues, or a tendency to panic mid-air.

What should I wear?

  • Shoes: Hiking boots or sturdy tennis shoes with grip
  • Clothes: Flexible, breathable gear
  • Gloves: Strongly recommended for grip and hand protection

Do I need to bring anything?

Nope. They provide a helmet, harness, and all the gear. Just bring yourself (and maybe some bravery).

Can I take my phone?

You can, but if you drop it mid-climb… well, it’s gone forever. Leave valuables in a secure location and just live in the moment.
