NOTE 1: This class is held at the Fran Ryan Center, 865 E Capital St., Columbus, OH 43205.

Whether you’re new to art or just need to brush up on/expand your creative skill set, learn to accurately and expressively draw and paint in this crash course covering all the fundamentals of artistic design in a 2d format.

In this class students will learn the basic process of drawing and painting from observation. The lessons will center around working in black and white, first in dry media, then in paint. Anyone who wants to use color may do so and mixed media experimentation is encouraged, but lessons and demonstrations will center on fundamentals for the beginner.

Students will be introduced to or reinforce their understanding of the theoretical fundamentals of creating images with dry media and paint, including elements of design, perspective and accurate proportion drawing, and foundational techniques of applying dry and wet media. Techniques will include observational drawing informed by constructive methods, sight-size method, grid method from photo reference, how to transfer a drawing, and various applications of dry and wet media like scumbling, glazing, and impasto, etc. Projects will include still life drawing and painting from life, and drawing and painting from photo reference, subject matter student’s choice. Students will be encouraged to explore expressive mixed media aesthetics while demonstrating a grasp of fundamentals.
