On Sunday, April 12, The Thurman Cafe in German Village quickly became the talk of the town… pretty typical for a spot famous for massive burgers and regular celebrity sightings.

But this time was much, much different.

A fire broke out at the legendary burger joint, and now the future for this Columbus staple is up in the air.

According to 10TV, the fire is believed to have started in a back storeroom, though an official cause has not yet been confirmed. Refrigerators and freezers full of food were lost, and the dining room did not fair much better. Smoke damage covered many of the cool knick-knacks, lampshades, and signed dollar bills in soot.

Even more surreal, when the owners walked through the space the next day, half-eaten meals were still sitting on tables, left behind as staff quickly evacuated everyone safely during the fire (10TV).

But that’s the part that sticks with you. Everyone got out safely.

The Thurman Cafe Experience

Thurman’s was one of the first restaurants many of us Columbusites can remember eating at… quite the way to start our Columbus food journeys. With a borderline absurd amount of burger options on the menu, it was literally impossible to be unable to find something that you didn’t like at Thurman’s.

Yet as good as the food was, that was always only part of the charm.

If you’ve been to Thurman’s, you know the waiting area all too well. The arcade machines. The elevated seating areas. The low ceilings. It was almost an inevitability that if you were going to Thurman’s, you’d have to factor in at least a 20-minute wait. But that was part of the experience, and frankly, there was no better place to have to wait for a table than Thurman’s.

Grab a beer at the bar, take it into the waiting room, grab a standing table, and just amp yourself up to finish an entire Thurmanator. And the relief you’d feel when your name was called and you were ushered back into the bar? There’s nothing like that feeling.

But now… we’re all waiting on that table again. Just in a very different way.

The Thurman Cafe Legacy

It’s not just a restaurant. It’s one of those places where everyone feels like they belong. Where you bring out-of-town friends. Where you go when you’re really hungry. Where the vibe is just… Thurman’s.

Now, the arcade machines are quiet. The waiting room is empty. The hosts aren’t calling your name.

But someday, they will again.

We’re with you, Thurman’s. No matter how long it takes for you to re-emerge from the ashes…

Trust us… we’ll wait.
