Let me start by saying that my favorite Christmas movie of all time is The Polar Express. I saw it in IMAX when it was first released, and let me tell you, it was life-changing. Between the hot chocolate dance and that iconic Glacier Gulch scene (steepest downhill grade in the world, no big deal), it set the bar for Christmas magic very high.
While none of these train rides include high-speed antics across frozen lakes or Tom Hanks in multiple roles, they’re still full of holiday cheer and the perfect way to get into the spirit.
Here’s the scoop on the best holiday train rides around Central Ohio, so grab your golden ticket and let’s choo-choo our way through some festive fun.
1. Hocking Valley Scenic Railway – Santa Train
33 W Canal St, Nelsonville, OH 45764 | 🚂 1 hour and 15 minutes from Columbus
🎄 Weekends: Now thru Dec. 22
For over 40 years, the Santa Train has been a holiday staple, chugging through the scenic (and hopefully snow-dusted) Hocking River Valley. This round-trip ride from Nelsonville to East Logan is the ultimate family-friendly holiday tradition. Not only is the train decked out with festive decor and blasting Christmas music, but Santa himself makes the rounds to visit with every child on board.
Each kiddo gets a candy cane treat and the chance to share their Christmas wish list with the big guy. Pro tip: make sure your little ones rehearse their wish list — there’s no stammering when you’re face-to-face with the man in red. And please, if you ask for a bell from his sleigh, make sure there are no holes in your pockets!
These trains sell out faster than reindeer on Christmas Eve, so grab your tickets early!
2. LM&M Railroad – North Pole Express
16 E South St, Lebanon, OH 45036 | 🚂 1 hour and 20 minutes from Columbus
🎄 Dates: Now – Dec. 29
If you’ve ever wanted to recreate your own Polar Express moment, the North Pole Express at Lebanon Mason Monroe Railroad is the next best thing. • Coach Class: Classic bench seating for a vintage train experience.
• Deluxe Class: More legroom and cushy, climate-controlled seats for those who believe holiday cheer pairs well with comfort.
Hot chocolate is available for purchase at the station, and yes, you’re totally allowed to bring it onboard.
