The Short North may be the trendy epicenter of Columbus, but did you know it’s hiding some serious senior citizens in plain sight?

Beneath the layers of new bars, hip places for a delicious meal, and shiny boutiques, there’s a treasure trove of spots that have been around for decades. Yes, decades. As in, older than your favorite band currently on their “nostalgia” tour.

Let’s take a trip down memory lane and show some love to the OGs of the neighborhood, shall we?

Thank you to the Short North Gazette’s A-to-Z Directory for making this list possible!

On Paper | Opened 1997

743 N High St, Columbus, OH 43215

Who says handwriting is dead? On Paper has been a haven for writers, artists, and stationery enthusiasts since 1997 — basically a century in “stationery store” years. Here, you’ll find fountain pens that make you feel like Hemingway, journals that whisper “write a bestseller,” and wax seals that scream “I’m fancy.” If you want to channel your inner Jane Austen or just send the most thoughtful thank-you note ever, On Paper is your spot.

Mike’s Grill | Opened c. 1960s

724 N High St, Columbus, OH 43215

Mike’s Grill is like a time capsule of the Short North before it got, well, fancy. A dive bar in the best sense of the term, Mike’s has been slinging beers, jukebox hits, and occasional lotto tickets since RFK senior was still in public office. Whether you’re here for a pinball game or just to soak up the no-frills charm, Mike’s is a cozy reminder of simpler times.

Luigi’s Pawn Shop | Opened 1960

1245 N High St, Columbus, OH 43201

Luigi’s has been pawning treasures since The Beatles’ drummer was Pete Best (only real ones know that he was their original tubthumper). Need a vintage guitar, a gold chain, or a random power tool? Luigi’s has you covered. It’s the kind of place where you can buy a family heirloom and a set of used golf clubs in the same visit.

Press Grill | Opened c. 1920s

741 N High St, Columbus, OH 43215

Serving up comfort food and cocktails since the days when “prohibition” was just a word to ignore, Press Grill is as classic as it gets. Legend has it, this is where working stiffs and newspaper editors used to swap stories (and maybe a few secrets) over a stiff drink. The menu has evolved, but the charm hasn’t — try their burgers or their late-night bites for a taste of history.

Mac’s Proper Pub | Opened 1988

693 N High St, Columbus, OH 43215

Mac’s is the quintessential pub experience — cozy, hearty, and unapologetically Scottish. Their Guinness Stew and Scotch Eggs have been warming bellies since ‘88, and the sauerkraut balls? Absolute legends. Whether you’re a regular or a first-timer, you’ll leave feeling like family (or at least like someone who ate too many sauerkraut balls). As someone with Scottish blood coursing through my veins, I always feel a sort of magnetism to Mac’s.

Piercology | Opened 1994

190 W 2nd Ave, Columbus, OH 43201

Piercology has been poking holes in people (in a totally safe, professional way) for over 30 years. Whether you’re getting your first piercing or your 30th, they’ve got the expertise and sterile vibes you’re looking for.

St. James Tavern | Opened 1996

1057 N 4th St, Columbus, OH 43201

Affectionately known as the neighborhood bar without a neighborhood (in its early years), St. James Tavern is now an Italian Village gem. Its motto, “No Crap on Tap,” means you’re getting a stellar beer lineup every time. Plus, their jukebox is so good it deserves its own playlist on Spotify. Swing by for a round of pool, a $2.50 well drink, and a hefty dose of good vibes.

Short North Tavern | Opened 1981

674 N High St, Columbus, OH 43215

Short North Tavern is a bar for everyone — corporate bigwigs, construction workers, and everyone in between. It’s been a neighborhood staple since the early ‘80s, offering strong drinks and no pretense. Fun fact: It’s older than the term “Short North” itself.

Torso Short North | Opened 1998

772 N High St, Ste. 100, Columbus, OH 43215

Torso has been keeping Columbus fashionable (and a little risqué) since the late ‘90s. Known for its selection of men’s underwear and swimwear, it’s the perfect place to upgrade your wardrobe — or find a last-minute Valentine’s Day / date night gift that’s equal parts bold and unexpected.

Lemongrass Fusion Bistro | Opened 1999

641 N High St, Columbus, OH 43215

Lemongrass has been bringing fusion cuisine to the Short North for over two decades. Think Thai meets Mediterranean with a dash of “let’s grab a cocktail and stay awhile.” It’s been a go-to spot for creative dishes and date nights since Clinton was president.
