When Indiana lineman Roy Neary (Richard Dreyfuss) witnesses a UFO, he becomes obsessed with discovering the truth behind the encounter. The film’s emphasis on family, peace, and understanding over intergalactic destruction was inspired by other peaceful alien films such as The Day the Earth Stood Still (Robert Wise, 1951) and is inspiration for recent releases Nope (Jordan Peele, 2022) and Asteroid City (Wes Anderson, 2023). Close Encounters stars Dreyfuss, Teri Garr, and Melinda Dillon, with a notable cameo by legendary French filmmaker François Truffaut. The Academy Award for Best Cinematography was given to Vilmos Zsigmond for his work on the film. (137 mins., 70mm)
