In this program, Keith Bengtson will give a brief discussion of the history of maple syrup, as well as instructions on the making of this sweet treat. The program will include discussion of Native, colonial, traditional and modern techniques of creating maple syrup as well as a display of historic techniques showing how people tapped the maple trees to collect the sap. Stations will be set up focusing on each of the traditional processes of production, along with displays of the tools used.
Participants are encouraged to dress appropriately as the program will be held outdoors. The program will run throughout the afternoon.
Keith Bengtson is a long-time employee of Ohio History Connection, and former site manager of Fort Hill, Serpent Mound and SunWatch Indian Village. He currently works at Fort Ancient. Keith holds a BA in US history and Native American studies from Northland College in Wisconsin. He has also studied extensively with members of the Ojibwe Nation and many museums.
