Spanning 40 years in the Deep South, The Color Purple follows the life of Celie from a pregnant teen forced to give up her children to a woman who finally finds some peace after years of abuse. Celie’s only comfort is her sister Nettie, but when her father gives her to Albert, she is separated from Nettie and lives in desperate isolation, more servant than wife, and beaten regularly. In her journey, she meets Shug, a singer dealing with her own demons, and their blossoming relationship eventually gives Celie the strength to leave Albert and reunite her with Nettie and her children. 35mm
