Much like the greatest sitcom of all time, Seinfeld, one of the greatest restaurants in recent memory in Columbus has decided to go out on their own terms… on top.

Chapman’s Eat Market, the beloved German Village restaurant owned by critically and commercial acclaimed Chef BJ Lieberman, will be closing its doors this August.

This is not your typical quiet closure that leaves loyal customers and restaurant staff blindsided. Nope. This is a planned exit. A classy bow-out from a place that could’ve coasted for years but instead chose to leave while still at the top of the local dining scene.

A Culinary Heavyweight

If you’re unfamiliar, Chef BJ Lieberman is no small name in the Columbus food world. He’s a two-time James Beard Award semifinalist and the mind behind not only Chapman’s Eat Market, but also the Ginger Rabbit Jazz Lounge in the Short North and the newly opened Italian spot, Metsi’s.

Chapman’s quickly became a fan favorite among German Village locals and Columbus foodies alike, thanks to its ever-changing, inventive menu and warm hospitality. It’s the kind of spot you bring someone when you’re trying to show off what the Columbus food scene is capable of.

The location had history, too. It was the site of the first ever Max & Erma’s, one of the most beloved restaurant chains in the entire Midwest.

Chapman’s also focused heavily on the wellbeing of their employees, taking a 3% charge to every bill to provide their entire staff with benefits, fair wages, and more.

One of Columbus’ Favorite Restaurants

You don’t need us to tell you how much Chapman’s has meant to Columbus.

Public reaction to the news says it all, as it has been emotional, yet supportive. Some Facebook commenters have written things like “So sorry to see you leave! You have been such a positive asset to the neighborhood!” and another, in all caps, “SOMEBODY DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS!!!!!!”

We agree! Somebody SHOULD do something about this!!

Why Are They Closing?

In a recent social media statement, the restaurant shared that they are approaching the end of their lease and have decided not to renew. An exact closing date hasn’t been announced yet, but they’ll be serving through sometime in August.

Could this be another case of a landlord asking for too much? Or maybe it was just time to move on, especially with the excitement and effort surrounding Metsi’s recent grand opening?

Only time will tell. But one thing’s for sure: whatever ends up moving into that cozy corner of S 3rd St and Frankfort has some massive shoes to fill. Like a toddler wearing Shaquille O’Neal’s sneakers.

The Cream of the Crop

Chapman’s was the real deal. A place that delivered not just incredible food, but a dining experience worth remembering. And in a time when restaurants seem to come and go like seasonal flavors at Jeni’s, Chapman’s left a mark.

So before they close for good, go show your love to the team that made it all happen.

Visit Chapman’s Eat Market one last time at 739 S 3rd St, Columbus, OH 43206.
