If you told me there was a jaw-dropping Southeast Asian temple tucked into Bexley, Ohio, I would have thought you were crazy.

Because when you think of Central Ohio, you probably think cornfields, Buckeye football, and aggressively flat terrain. You do not think ornate Buddhist temples glowing in gold at sunset.

And yet… here we are.

Right in the heart of Bexley sits Watlao Buddhamamakaram Temple, a vibrant, intricately detailed Buddhist temple that feels like it was transported straight from Southeast Asia and carefully placed in the middle of our humble Midwestern landscape.

It is unexpected. It is magnificent. And it might be one of the most beautiful hidden gems in Central Ohio.

What Is Watlao Buddhamamakaram Temple?

Watlao Buddhamamakaram Temple is a Buddhist temple built in 2009 for Laotian and Thai Buddhist communities in Columbus.

The architecture is almost a carbon copy of what you’d see in Southeast Asia, which is exactly why it stops you in your tracks the first time you see it.

It is not subtle. This is not “blends into the neighborhood.”

This is bold color. Intricate detailing. Gold accents. Decorative flourishes everywhere you look.

The First Thing You’ll Notice: The Color

From a distance, the temple’s vibrant exterior almost feels surreal against Ohio’s soft suburban backdrop.

The reds.

The blues.

The golds.

On a gray Ohio day, it stands out. On a sunny day, it glows.

But the color is just the beginning.

The Details Are What Make It Magical

Once you get closer, that’s when things get really interesting.

The architecture is layered with ornate patterns, decorative trim, and meticulously painted accents. Every edge feels intentional. Every line feels purposeful.

One of the most striking features is the pair of snake-like dragon sculptures flanking the entrance pathway. They feel both protective and ceremonial, guiding you toward the temple itself.

The landscaping is thoughtfully designed as well. The grounds are clean, curated, and peaceful. It feels separated from the rush of the city… even though you’re not far from it at all.

It’s quiet, calm, and reflective.

The Best Time to Visit Watlao Buddhamamakaram Temple

If you want the full experience, go when the sun is out.

Even better… go at sunrise or sunset. Golden hour is magical at this temple.

The way the light hits the gold detailing and bounces off the reds and blues is honestly unreal. The entire structure seems to warm up and shimmer.

It’s a moment where you stop talking mid-sentence and just stare.

Why Is There a Southeast Asian Temple in Bexley, Ohio?

Short answer? Community.

Watlao Buddhamamakaram was built to support Laotian and Thai Buddhists living in Central Ohio. Like many cultural and religious spaces across the country, it serves as both a place of worship and a cultural anchor.

And while it is a functioning Buddhist temple, visitors of all backgrounds are welcome to experience the peaceful environment… respectfully.

You do not have to be Buddhist to appreciate beauty, intention, and serenity.

Sometimes it’s simply about stepping into a space that feels different from your everyday routine… and allowing yourself to slow down.

A Hidden Gem in Central Ohio

When you’re searching for unique things to do in Columbus Ohio or hidden gems in Central Ohio, this should absolutely be on the list. But often, it’s not.

It’s not loud. It’s not commercial. It’s not packed with tour buses.

It’s just quietly magnificent.

Watlao Buddhamamakaram Temple is proof that Ohio is like an onion. It’s got layers.

Cultural layers. Architectural layers. Stories you wouldn’t expect.

Because sometimes, the most breathtaking places aren’t in the Himalayas.

Sometimes they’re in Bexley.
