Why you’ll love it: giant, inventive sandwiches with punny names, premium meats, and a food-hall playground around you.

If the sandwich you’re eating doesn’t require two hands, a high-functioning jaw, and a pallet of napkins, can you even call it a sandwich? Well… yes, technically, but picture this:

A ¼-lb stack of mortadella, honey ham, salami, and capicola, plus mozzarella, balsamic glaze, red wine vinegar, mayo, oil, hot peppers, iceberg lettuce, and onion—all of which is testing the structural integrity of the fluffy baguette underneath.

Now, that’s a sandwich. In fact, that’s “The Carmella,” Buck City Sammies’ Sopranos-inspired spin on an old deli classic. And yes, it’s as delicious as it looks.

Welcome to the Pile High Club

Set inside East Market—the recently restored food hall in the trolley-district—Buck City is the brainchild of Chad Berton and Nile Woodson, two long-time friends and staples in the Columbus food scene. Their mission? Combine deli-style sandwiches with their own original and bold twists for an elevated sammie experience. And as far as we’re concerned… mission accomplished.

Buck City is one of those newer food spots that’s taking the Columbus culinary scene to the next level. Think imported Italian meats for the kind of flavor every sandwich-lover wants, gloriously grand portions every sandwich-lover deserves, and rotating specials every sandwich-lover should put on the calendar.

The Meat of the Matter

We’ve already mentioned one of their signatures, The Carmella, but there’s plenty more where that came from, like the “The Classy Lady” (pastrami, house slaw, Parson North stout mustard, chive cream cheese, salt & vinegar chips sandwiched between two perfect pieces of rye). Or, if you’re not really a red meat person you could try their other rye-driven masterpiece, “The Karen,” which has smoked turkey, house pimento cheese, cranberry jam, red onion, and arugula. All three of these are on the permanent board for a reason.

But it’s the bi-weekly specials that truly won over our hearts (and stomachs). Their most recent “What the Cluck” sammie was a downright spiritual experience: 24-hour-brined, double-fried chicken, bourbon bacon jam, sriracha ranch, pickled red onions, and arugula on farmhouse sourdough? Cluck yeah.

Vegetarians Have No Fear

The vegetarian options at Buck City aren’t a “consolation prize.” Their meatless builds are just as stacked as they are mouthwatering, like “Tabby’s Truffle,” a melty, cheesy, truffle-rich build with roasted artichoke, arugula, truffle honey, and fresh arugula for a peppery bite. It’s the meatless move that still leaves you smiling (and maybe in need of a nap).

Okay, Now Go Eat One

We got hungry just writing this and can’t imagine how hungry you must be after reading it. Go, run, and find your new favorite sammie at East Market (Tuesday–Sunday, 11am–9pm).

Turn it into a choose-your-own-adventure! After your sammie, stroll to NOLA Daq Shack for a sweet, boozy finish. Or, if you’re looking to make it a night, slip into Switch, the market’s speakeasy open on Fridays & Saturdays.

Pro tip: The Buck City food-truck also rolls to Land-Grant Brewing on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, typically between 5–9 pm. Grab a beer, snag a sammie, and maybe even play some trivia. Sounds like a helluva Tuesday to us!

Plan your attack by checking out their menu here and for rotating specials and Land-Grant truck updates, follow @buckcitysammies
