The Midwest may be known for its over-the-top friendliness (cue me saying “ope, sorry ’bout that” 58 times today), but apparently we’re in a battle with other midwest cities, and we’re determined to come out on top!

Recently, Arika Herron from Axios Indianapolis paid Columbus a visit, and let’s just say our fair city left quite an impression.

Let’s dive into why Columbus might just be the Midwest city to beat, we’ll rate Arika’s trip, give her a solid pat on the back for her choices, and toss in some top-notch recommendations for her next visit.

The Battle Begins: Columbus Does Indy Better Than Indy?

What Arika Did:

1. Scioto Mile Strolls:

• Arika took a scenic walk along the Scioto Mile, enjoying the downtown riverfront and its gorgeous promenade packed with parks and museums. She even hinted that it’s what Indy’s White River could be someday… We think this area will be even better once the Columbus Symphony’s proposed breathtaking music hall is complete.

2. MLS All-Star Match:

• She caught a game at the defending MLS Cup Champs’ shiny new stadium and got to experience all the nightlife in the Arena District.

3. North Market Lunch:

• Arika grabbed lunch at North Market, indulging in a variety of cuisines from Indian to Thai to barbecue. Because if the variety is there why wouldn’t you order it all?

4. Short North Crawl:

• She explored the Short North’s nightlife scene and the unique bars, art galleries, and restaurants that call the area home.

Rating Arika’s Trip:

Arika, you nailed it! We give you a 8.5/10 for experiencing so much of what makes the 614 such a hidden gem of a city.

Your trip to Columbus was well-rounded, fun, and hit some of our best spots. But there’s soooo much to love about CBus, we can’t help but think you only scratched the surface. Here’s what to add next time:

1. Quarry Trails Metro Park:

• Imagine hiking, biking, rock climbing, or even kayaking in a breathtaking metro park carved out of a quarry. It’s the perfect blend of humanity, nature, and adventure right in the city. Quarry Trails Metro Park is unlike any park we’ve ever been to.

2. Agni in German Village:

• Head over to Agni in German Village, a culinary gem from Chef Avishar Barua of Joya’s fame. It’s a fusion of innovative flavors and traditional techniques that have been gathered from decades of travel and experiences that will blow your mind (and taste buds). I mean seriously, when was the last time you’ve seen a dinner menu take influence from both Guangzhou, China and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in the same breath?

3. Preston’s: A Burger Joint:

• You can’t visit Columbus without biting into a juicy burger from Preston’s, one the select few on our list of the best burger joints in the city. It’s a local favorite that will have you dreaming of beef long after you leave. Trust us, Preston’s burgers are the stuff of legend.

4. Wario’s Beef & Pork:

• For a true sandwich experience, Wario’s Beef & Pork is a must. Their sandwiches are as massive as they are legendary, packed with flavor and piled high with goodness. My personal favorites are The Cold Cut and The Chicken Caesar, but truth be told, I think I love all their sandwiches equally.

5. The Alibi Bourbon & Cocktail Lounge:

• Cap off your night at The Alibi Bourbon & Cocktail Lounge, where the bourbon flows freely and the cocktails are crafted to perfection. Seriously. Their cocktails might be the most perfect cocktails you’ll ever have. It’s the ideal spot for a nightcap with a cozy, sophisticated, intimate vibe.

Final Thoughts:

Arika, your visit to Columbus was a triumph, but we’re excited for you to do more exploring and indulging in CBus. Columbus isn’t trying to beat Indianapolis at its own game; we’re just setting the bar higher so other midwest cities can follow in our footsteps.

Columbus, you beautiful, walkable, delicious city, you’ve done it again. 🚶⚽🍔🍻
