When walking through the bustling Short North Arts District on weeknights and weekends, it seems like every restaurant is stuffed to the gills with people. And honestly, can you blame them?
There are so many excellent and unique restaurants in such a walkable strip of High Street that it has no choice but to attract a lot of hungry (and if you’re like me, hangry) Columbus-ites.
However, El Segundo Mexican Kitchen, a Cameron Mitchell restaurant, just announced its closure on March 3. We here at Step Out Columbus are, to put it bluntly, triste.
(Triste means sad in Spanish. Yes, we like to flex our bilingual muscles here from time to time).
While the reasoning for the closure is still uncertain, many foodies in the 614 are sad to see it go.
This Mexican-inspired joint first opened in August 2021, with many customers raving about everything from the service and cozy atmosphere to the drinks and, of course, the incredible Mexican fare.
Interestingly enough, the space that El Segundo occupied wasn’t the first Cameron Mitchell restaurant to call it home. Harvey & Ed’s, a Jewish deli concept, lived there for 16 months before closing.
Maybe the space is just haunted (kidding! Sorta…)
While we hate to see El Segundo go, we are excited to see what Cameron Mitchell has in store next for Central Ohio. A Mediterranean restaurant, Del Mar, is expected to open in Easton this summer following rave reviews from its sister restaurant down in Naples, Florida.
Let’s raise a glass and cheers to El Segundo Mexican Kitchen. Thanks for all the good eats!
