Stepping into The Brass Hand is like stepping into someone’s whimsical desert dream: warm, vibrant, earthy. Some of the cool kids might even describe it as psychedelic.
But the real soul of this Clintonville plant shop is rooted (apologies for the pun) in how personal it is. Owner and founder, Heather McCloud, hand-curates every detail—from the desert plants she drives in, to the shelves lined with gleaming vintage brass, down to the individual songs on the background playlist. It all stems from her. (Crap, we did it again. Sorry.)
The end result? A vibe and ambiance you can’t find anywhere else in Columbus. And we haven’t even gotten to the “hidden” potting room yet, an immersive community space available during open hours.
The Hidden Potting Room
The “hidden” potting room is often where a lot of the Brass Hand magic takes place. It’s basically an art studio for plants, complete with a hand-made workstation, a charm bar, and all the accessories you need to help your plant artistry flourish.
Here’s how it works:
All you have to do is show up with a plant and a pot. If you pick them out here, you get the full experience on the house—tools, art décor, hand-blended soil, and staff support. If you bring in a plant from home, they’ll give your plant the same TLC for a small repotting fee.
All in all, the average price of a fully custom arrangement is only around $24-$30. It’s an insanely good deal… especially when you consider how the plants are sourced. The owner literally flies out to Arizona, rents a truck, and drives hand-picked cacti, succulents, and houseplants back to Columbus. That alone makes it worth a visit.
Make it an Evening With Family, Friends, or Co-Workers
Want the shop to yourselves? The Brass Hand hosts private events after hours in two-hour chunks. Choose a private package and your crew gets the hidden potting room to shop, drink, chat, and get creative, aka pick a plant, pick a pot, and go wild at the charm bar. Each package includes a guided, hands-on hang that ends with everyone taking home a custom creation. And yes, drinking is allowed, but FYI, it is BYOB. Check their site for more details on the various packages.
Trinkets. Trinkets as far as the Eye Can See.
Come for the cacti, stay for the collectibles. The greenery is naturally the star of the show, but The Brass Hand is also chock-full of very giftable finds. The shelves gleam with hand-polished vintage brass (animals, candleholders, watering cans), speckled clay and handmade vases, and a rotating lineup of local art and retro home goods.
Or you can follow your nose to the incense and apothecary staples that give the shop its signature scent. Finish your tour with their stunning jewelry—a curated case of vintage and new Navajo and Zuni silver, alongside small-maker brass and unique turquoise pieces—and you might just be able to check off some Christmas gifts early this year for once!
Your New Favorite Plant Awaits
Ready to spruce up your pad? (Last pun, we swear.) Head to The Brass Hand and mention “Step Out Columbus” at checkout to get Half Off Any Plant (limited to one per person).
That’s your sign to upgrade your desk buddy, rescue a bare corner, and join that growing number of Columbusites that “talk to their plants.” That’ll make more sense once you go in person. It’s a whole thing.
