5 Ways to “Get Outside” During April Showers in Columbus, Ohio

Family Friendly, Seasonal, Things to Do

April in Columbus is… unpredictable, to say the least.

One day you’re thinking “wow, I should pick up gardening as a hobby.” The next you’re watching sideways rain smack against your window like it has a personal vendetta (or, if you’re anything like the last few storms that rolled through, sideways HAIL).

Classic.

But just because it’s pouring doesn’t mean you have to surrender your plans and become one with your couch (tempting… I know). If you’re still itching to get out and do something this spring, here are 5 ways to feel like you’re outside… without actually getting drenched.

Rainy Day Activities in Columbus and Central Ohio

1. Take a “Beach Day” at the Columbus Zoo Aquarium

📍 4850 W Powell Rd, Powell, OH 43065

If the weather won’t cooperate, simply… ignore it.

The Columbus Zoo’s Shores & Aquarium is basically your loophole to experiencing the ocean without leaving Ohio (or dealing with sand in places it absolutely should not be).

You can wander through and watch sea lions glide through the water, check out manatees doing their slow-motion thing, and pretend you’re on some tropical vacation instead of standing in a rain jacket five minutes ago.

It’s oddly calming while tricking your brain into thinking you escaped the Midwest for a bit.

2. Play Sand Volleyball “Outdoors”

📍 668 Grandview Ave, Columbus, OH 43215

There’s something deeply funny about playing beach volleyball in 40-degree weather while it’s raining.

And yet… here we are.

Places like Woodland’s Backyard let you live out your Top Gun beach volleyball dreams (minus the jeans and, unfortunately, the abs) even when the weather is doing its worst.

Rain? Doesn’t matter. During the notoriously unpredictable months, Woodland’s Backyard erects a giant inflatable dome over their beach volleyball courts, so you can spike and dig to your heart’s content!

3. Get Lost Inside COSI and Forget It’s Raining (or Past Your Bedtime) Entirely

📍 333 W Broad St, Columbus, OH 43215

COSI is one of those places where you walk in and suddenly it’s three hours later and you have no idea what time it is… or what the weather is doing.

You can bounce between exhibits on everything from dinosaurs to space to the science behind Pixar (which is way cooler than it has any right to be).

And the best part? This is one of the few places where going as an adult alone doesn’t feel weird at all. Everyone’s too busy launching rockets or playing with interactive exhibits to judge you.

Rainy day = solved.

4. Wander Through Franklin Park Conservatory (AKA Spring… But Controlled)

📍 1777 E Broad St, Columbus, OH 43203

If April refuses to give you nice weather, Franklin Park Conservatory will simply create its own.

Walking in feels like stepping into a completely different climate… warm, green, and full of life. It’s like the Garden of Eden, but with fewer snakes and temptations.

The Blooms & Butterflies exhibit is a standout. You can stroll through lush gardens while butterflies casually float around like they own the place.

It’s peaceful, it’s beautiful, and it’s the closest thing to a guaranteed “nice day” you’ll get in Ohio this time of year.

5. Hit the “Course” Without Ever Seeing the Sky

If you’re like me and the second it hits 50 degrees you start thinking about golf… April can be a rude awakening.

Especially seeing the lush greens and trees at Augusta National during Masters weekend.

Enter indoor golf simulators.

You get all the fun of playing a round, minus losing an entire sleeve of balls before the back nine. Except here, there’s no rain delays, no mud, no “cart path only” rule ruining your vibe.

Plus, most spots come with solid food and drinks, which means your “round” can quickly turn into a full-blown hang.

Final Thoughts (From Someone Who Has Been Personally Victimized by April Weather)

Look… April in Columbus is going to do whatever it wants.

But that doesn’t mean you have to sit around waiting for a perfect 70-degree day that may or may not show up.

Whether you’re swimming with manatees, diving into science exhibits, or playing sand volleyball at 12 AM, there are plenty of ways to get out and enjoy the city without letting the rain win.

Plus there’s something kinda fun about beating the weather at its own game.
