Ah, Ohio State game day—the one day when virtually the entire city of Columbus is dressed in their Scarlet and Gray, and the phrase “Go Bucks!” becomes your go-to greeting.

Whether you’re a seasoned tailgater who can set up a grill in your sleep or a first-timer ready to soak in all the Buckeye traditions, this guide is your ultimate playbook. We’re talking about everything from crack-of-dawn tailgates (because yes, 5 AM is a thing) to soaking up those celebratory drinks with some greasy goodness afterward.

We’ll give you suggestions for noon games, afternoon/evening games, and different options based on what you want your game day to look like. If you’re a party-er, we’ve got you covered. If you’re someone whose eyes are glued to each snap, you’ll find the best places to do so here.

So grab your Buckeye gear, prep your vocal cords for lots of “O-Hs” and “I-Os,”and let’s dive into how to make your Ohio State game day one for the books.

Game Day Tailgating Tips

The Early Bird Gets the Spot

  • Arrival Time: For noon games, arrive at 5 AM to secure a prime tailgating spot. Note that parking permits are required around the stadium.
  • Best Tailgating Spots: Park on West Campus or Ag Campus for first-come first-served spots. The Ag Campus Administration Building is a popular choice. There are shuttles that pick you up from Carmack Lot 1 that will drop you off near The Shoe.
  • Pro Tip: Even for afternoon or evening games, arriving after 6:30 or 7 AM might mean missing out on good parking and tailgating.

Traditions Worth the Wait

  • Skull Sessions: Head to St. John’s Arena for the Skull Session, where the band marches from Ohio Stadium to the arena 2 hours and 20 minutes before kickoff. This is a must-see for fans who love the tradition of Ohio State Football. Hear speeches from Head Coach Ryan Day and select players, special guests, and more that are sure to get you amped up for the game. Seats are first come, first served, so get there early!
  • Pre-Game Rituals: Arrive at the stadium at least 45 minutes before kickoff. This will give you ample time to get through security, grab a hotdog (or 6), and find your seats so that you can enjoy Script Ohio, the dotting of the “I,” and other pregame traditions.

Where to Eat Before, During, and After the Game

Breakfast Spots for Noon Games:

Game-Watching Venues Close to Campus

  • Adriatico’s Pizza: A calmer environment with great pizza and alcohol options located on Ohio State’s South Campus
  • The O-Zone Tailgate on Lane: Always a great crowd with no cover.
  • The Varsity Club: A popular spot on campus to eat, drink, and watch every game, but arrive early due to limited space.
  • Little Bar on Campus: Features a projector and a tent; this spot is more popular amongst college students, but all 21+ are welcome.
  • Out-R-Inn: A campus bar with a vibrant game day atmosphere, though usually very crowded (which actually makes the experience even more fun). This is another spot that will mostly be just college students, but has popular pizza by the slice.

Post-Game Recovery

Greasy Goodness to Sober Up

  • PJ’s or Sicilia’s Pizza on Frambes: Great for soaking up all the drinks you bombarded your body with to help the Buckeyes careen to victory (the jury is still out if this works but we don’t care).
  • Buckeye Donuts on High Street: Gyros, fries, and, of course, donuts.
  • Adriatico’s Pizza: As mentioned before, this spot is more calm and their pizza will magically nurse you back to sobriety.
  • Short North Options: If you’re in the mood to explore a bit further, the Short North has plenty of greasy (and delicious) options.

That’s a Wrap!

So there you have it—a foolproof game plan for an Ohio State game day that’ll have you chanting “we don’t give a damn for the whole state of ❌ichigan” long after the final whistle. So, take this guide, make it your own, and most importantly, savor every moment. After all, there’s no place like The Shoe on game day.

May your tailgates be epic, your seats prime, and your post-game pizza just greasy enough to keep the party going! O-H!
