If you’re looking for a Halloween event in Columbus that’s spooky enough for the kids but fun enough for adults too, look no further than Boo at the Zoo at the Columbus Zoo.

The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium Boo at the Zoo is back for 2025 with three weekends of family-friendly Halloween fun:

  • October 10–12
  • October 17–19
  • October 24–26

Note that each day of the weekend (Friday thru Sunday) have different hours of operation.

  • Fridays: 5 PM – 8 PM
  • Saturdays: 10 AM – 8 PM
  • Sundays: 10 AM – 5 PM

Whether you’re in it for the costumes, the candy, the Halloween themes in all the different regions of the zoo, or the animals dressed up like pumpkins (ok, maybe that last one’s just wishful thinking), Boo at the Zoo is one of Central Ohio’s most beloved (and underrated) fall traditions.

What to Expect at Boo at the Zoo in Columbus Ohio

So, what actually goes down at Boo at the Zoo? Think less haunted house and more enchanted trail. The zoo transforms into a Halloween wonderland filled with festive decorations, light displays, animal encounters, and kid-friendly entertainment. No jump scares to worry about!

  • 🎃 Trick-or-Treat Trails: Candy stations are spread throughout the zoo, so yes, kids (and let’s be real, parents too) can get their sugar fix.
  • 🦁 Animals + Autumn: You’ll still see all your favorite zoo animals, but with a fun seasonal backdrop and the Zoo’s character mascots dressed up in their own costumes!
  • 👻 Not-So-Scary Fun: This isn’t meant to terrify anyone. Instead, it’s about costumes, candy, and fall vibes in a safe environment.

FAQs

Do Kids Wear Costumes to Boo at the Zoo?

Of course!! Dressing up is half the fun. You’ll see kids in everything from tiny superheroes to toddlers dressed as zoo animals (the irony is not lost here). Costumes are encouraged, but keep it comfortable… Walking the zoo takes energy, and you’ll want the kids to last until the last piece of candy (and then promptly pass out on the car ride home).

Note: If you are not accompanied by a child under the age of 13, you are NOT permitted to wear a costume. Learn more about the Zoo’s costume policy here.

Do You Get Candy at Boo at the Zoo?

Yes, you do! Candy stations are one of the highlights of the event. Just bring a bag, bucket, or whatever your trick-or-treat vessel of choice may be. The zoo partners with candy brands to hand out treats at multiple stations, making it feel like a trick-or-treat marathon.

Is Boo at the Zoo Worth It?

In short: yes. If you’re looking for a Halloween event that works for all ages, the Columbus Zoo’s Boo at the Zoo is one of the best in the city. Unlike neighborhood trick-or-treating, the zoo adds a layer of entertainment, animal encounters, and seasonal flair.

Ok, But Why Is the Columbus Zoo So Famous?

The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium is one of the most well-known zoos in the country, thanks in part to its former director “Jungle” Jack Hanna, who brought international recognition to the Columbus Zoo through his energetic appearances on David Letterman, Good Morning America, and countless other shows!

Beyond the beloved Jungle Jack, the zoo is famous for its world-class animal care, diverse exhibits, its global impact on animal conservation, and unique seasonal events like Boo at the Zoo and Wildlights! Plus, it’s one of the largest zoos in the entire country!
