It’s hard to imagine a trip to the Scioto Mile without Milestone 229.

With floor-to-ceiling windows offering panoramic views of downtown and the Scioto River, Milestone 229 wasn’t just a restaurant — it was part of the scenery. It’s where diners gathered to watch the fountains dance, soak in stunning sunsets, and experience Columbus from one of its most gorgeous vantage points.

But now two months after the announced closure, there hasn’t been a peep about what will go into one of the most sought after and scenic pieces of real estate in the entire city.

If you missed it, Milestone 229 shared in a statement in December 2024 that it was unable to come to terms on a new lease agreement with the city of Columbus, marking the end of an era for this one-of-a-kind space.

For over a decade, Milestone 229 had been a cornerstone of the Scioto Mile, offering “elevated comfort food” from its scratch kitchen, a full bar with creative cocktails and extensive wine offerings, and menu options for every kind of diner — gluten-free, vegan, or otherwise. Whether you were there for a date night, a family meal, or happy hour with friends, the ambience always kept you coming back.

Nestled right next to the Scioto Mile fountain, Milestone’s nearly 360-degree windows gave diners a view worth toasting to. The fountain’s dancing waters, the city skyline, the glow of downtown at night — it’s hard to imagine a more captivating backdrop for a meal.

But after the disputes between Milestone 229 and the City of Columbus went sour, thereby forcing the beautiful restaurant to close in late December 2024, the building is still vacant.

We’d like to imagine that Milestone 229’s closure isn’t in vain, but as of right now, it feels like it was ripped from us just to allow the building to stand dormant, far below its full potential.

We’ll see what’s to come for this space. In the meantime, let’s hope this vacancy doesn’t last for much longer.

Because as it stands right now, Milestone’s closure was unnecessary…
