Ohio’s buildings, neighborhoods, urban centers and rural landscapes give us an understanding of history no other documents or evidence can. Join architectural historian Barbara Powers in discovering the richness and diversity of Ohio’s architecture. The story of Ohio, from early settlement, through industrial expansion, to modern times, is reflected in its landmark buildings, urban centers, small towns and the work of specific architects and builders. This talk will discuss broad architectural trends and characteristics of specific styles examined within the context of 18th, 19th and 20th century Ohio.

Barbara Powers is emerita State Historic Preservation Office, Ohio History Connection, with forty-two years of experience in historic survey and National Register of Historic Places programs. She served as the state coordinator for the Society of Architectural Historians’ online publication ArchipediaOhio’s 100 Classic Buildings, 2013-2019. Her published works include “Ohio’s Pride, the Art and Architecture of the Ohio State Office Building” (Timeline , 2006); “Louis Bromfield’s Big House at Malabar Farm: Form Follows Fiction,” in Re-creating the American Past, Essays on the Colonial Revival (University of Virginia Press, 2006) and “The Architecture of the Ohio Governor’s Residence” in Our First Family’s Home (Ohio University Press, 2008). She holds a master’s degree in architectural history from the University of Virginia.
