If you’re strolling through Victorian Village in Columbus, Ohio, you might just walk right past one of the most charming Italian restaurants in the city without even knowing it. Because tucked behind one of the beautiful Victorian-style century homes is perhaps Columbus’ most hidden gem, Basi Italia. Trust me, this spot is worth the hunt.

Not convinced yet? Give us a few paragraphs to sway you towards hitting up this incredible Italian joint.

A Quaint, Homey Vibe

Basi Italia feels like a slice of Italy transported to Columbus. Nestled between two houses, it gives off a cozy, “you’re-family-here” vibe that’s instantly comforting and would make Olive Gardens around the country jealous.

The patio is scenic and intimate, perfect for a romantic date night or catching up with friends over wine. Inside, the experience is just as special. You can sit at the bar and watch the chefs work their magic in the open kitchen. It’s like dinner and a show.

But as adorable as the ambiance is, the real star here is the food. And oh, what a star it is.

The Food: Next-Level Italian Cuisine

We kicked things off with appetizers that set the bar ridiculously high. The pistachio flatbread was a perfect balance of crunchy and nutty, while the mussels were cooked to perfection, swimming in a flavorful broth that begged to be soaked up with bread.

Then the entrées arrived, and things got even better. The prosciutto-wrapped scallops were delicate yet bold in flavor, and the grilled branzino was so fresh it could have swum right onto the plate. But the showstopper, without a doubt, was the eggplant parmesan.

Humor me for a second. You need to know all about this eggplant parm. It’s not your average soggy, breaded mess that you think of when you hear the words “eggplant parm” — no, it’s a work of art.

The eggplant is perfectly crispy on the outside yet tender enough to melt in your mouth. It’s layered with a dreamy tomato sauce and a green pesto-y type of sauce that blend together like an Italian symphony. Every bite was perfection, the kind of dish that makes you want to close your eyes and savor the moment. If there’s a better eggplant parm out there, I haven’t found it (and I challenge you to find one that’s better).

Save Room for Dessert (and Irish Coffee)

Even though we were stuffed, dessert was non-negotiable. We shared three decadent options — because why stop at one? From the rich tiramisu to creamy cannoli, every bite was indulgent. And the Irish coffee was the cherry on top, a warm and boozy end to an unforgettable meal. Yes, I ordered an Irish Coffee at an Italian place. Sue me (ok, don’t actually sue me, but you get the idea).

So, what are you waiting for? Find the alley, follow the aroma of fresh Italian cooking, and let Basi Italia transport you straight to Italy. Just make sure to order the eggplant parm, because if you’ll allow me to be so bold…
