If you’ve ever eaten at Schmidt’s Sausage Haus in German Village, you probably felt it…

Not just the food coma from a Bahama Mama and a cream puff the size of your head… but something else. Something warmer. Something harder to explain.

That feeling was Matt Schmidt.

Matt wasn’t just part of Schmidt’s… he was Schmidt’s in a lot of ways. A fifth-generation member of the family behind one of Columbus’ most iconic restaurants, Matt carried the legacy with a kind of energy you don’t see every day. The kind that couldn’t be faked, bottled, or taught.

You either have it or you don’t. And Matt had it in a way that made complete strangers feel like they’d been coming there for years.

More Than a Restaurant. Schmidt’s Is Family

Schmidt’s Sausage Haus has always been known for more than just incredible German food.

Yes, the sausages are legendary. Yes, the cream puffs are absurdly big and delicious. But what keeps people coming back – what turns first-time visitors into lifelong regulars – is the feeling of Schmidt’s. A sense of belonging and community in a restaurant full of strangers.

It’s loud. It’s joyful. It feels like you just walked into a family gathering. And no one embodied that spirit more than Matt.

Whether he was posting on social media with excitement about upcoming events, greeting guests, or just buzzing around the restaurant, you could tell how proud he was… not just of the food, but of what Schmidt’s meant to people.

He didn’t just want you to eat there.

He wanted you to feel like you belonged there.

A Passion You Couldn’t Miss

There’s something magnetic about people who truly love what they do.

Matt had that.

His passion for German culture, for food, and most importantly, for people, came through in everything he did. It’s easy to say someone “loved their job”… but with Matt, it felt bigger than that.

This wasn’t a job.

This was family. This was legacy. And he made sure everyone who walked through those doors got to experience that.

A Tragic Loss for Columbus

According to 10TV, Matt Schmidt passed away early Easter morning after a fire broke out at his Upper Arlington home.

He was sleeping in a sunroom at the back of the house, which is where the fire is believed to have started. While his wife and children were able to escape safely, Matt tragically did not.

He leaves behind his wife and three children.

It’s the kind of news that stops you in your tracks… especially when it’s someone who brought so much life to so many people.

How You Can Help

In the wake of this tragedy, a GoFundMe has been created to support Matt’s wife and children.

As of now, the fundraiser has already raised nearly $170,000, which says a lot about the impact Matt had on this community.

If you’re able to contribute, it’s a meaningful way to support the family he loved so deeply.

And if you can’t, even just taking a moment to think about them, to share their story, or to support Schmidt’s in any way… it all matters.

Matt Schmidt’s Legacy Won’t Be Forgotten

Places like Schmidt’s don’t just exist because of recipes or tradition. They exist because of people. People like Matt, who pour everything they have into creating something bigger than themselves.

The next time you walk into Schmidt’s, grab a sausage, sit at one of those long communal tables, and look around for a second.

That feeling… the laughter, the noise, the sense that you’re part of something…

That’s Matt.

And it’s not going anywhere.
