There aren’t many places in Central Ohio where the brisket is worth the drive. Legacy Smokehouse in Hilliard was one of them… but it’s nearly gone.

Every city has a handful of barbecue joints that hang a sign, slap some sauce on something, and call it smoked meat. And then there are the rare places, the ones where you can smell the wood fire before you open the door, that actually earn the name. Legacy Smokehouse, tucked into a beautiful building on Main Street in Hilliard, was one of those rare places. And on May 31, 2026, it closes its doors for the final time.

For nine years, Legacy punched far above its weight class in a city (and a state) that doesn’t always get the credit it deserves for great barbecue. Texas-style at its core, the smokehouse challenged the cliché that everything is bigger in the Lone Star State. Because it’s genuinely hard to imagine any BBQ more impressive than what came out of Legacy’s smoker.

“Places like this don’t come around often. Legacy brought real praise to Ohio BBQ.”

Legacy Smokehouse’s History

The origin story is the kind Central Ohio loves: a trailer, a smoker, folding tables, and a tent. No patio yet. No rooftop bar. Just hope, smoke, and people willing to put in the work to figure it out. From those scrappy early days, Legacy grew into something far bigger than a restaurant. It became part of the community.

The road wasn’t easy. A fire during the COVID pandemic forced the building dark for more than a year. Rising food costs surely chipped away at margins that were already razor-thin in an industry notorious for it. And when one of the owners suffered a heart attack, it forced a painful reckoning about what comes next. The decision to close wasn’t made lightly. It never is.

But what makes this one sting isn’t just the loss of great food… it’s the loss of a standard-setter. Central Ohio has no shortage of places calling themselves barbecue, but the list of spots doing it right is short. Legacy was on that list. It was the kind of place that made visitors from out of state raise an eyebrow and wonder why Ohio BBQ isn’t talked about more. That’s not a small thing. That’s a legacy, pun intended.

From the team at Legacy Smokehouse:

“Legacy became more than a place to eat. It became part of birthdays, graduations, weddings, fundraisers, team meals, Friday nights, patio nights, and Old Hilliard memories.”

“So yes, this chapter is closing. But we’re hopeful there’s another one ahead.”

A Final Thank You

To the staff who showed up every week, fired the smoker before the sun came up, and kept quality high through all of it… thank you.

To the owners who built something real out of a trailer and a dream… thank you.

Thankfully, there’s still time. Legacy Smokehouse in Hilliard is open through May 31. Get there if you can, because one last plate of something that took nine years to perfect is priceless.
