Every year, a weekend of insanity happens in Columbus. One of the largest rock and metal music festivals in the country rolls into town, takes over an entire part of the city, hosts some of the biggest bands on the planet…
…and somehow, a very large chunk of us Ohioans don’t really notice until we hear guitar riffs echoing into our living rooms from 10 miles away.
Sonic Temple Music Festival is the biggest, most forgotten festival in Ohio. And if you’ve never paid attention to it before, this is your sign to change that.
What Is Sonic Temple?
Sonic Temple is Ohio’s largest music and arts festival, held over four days at Historic Crew Stadium in Columbus. It’s a full-blown celebration of rock and metal culture, featuring:
- Massive, arena-level headliners
- Dozens of national and international touring acts
- Art installations and immersive experiences
- A surprisingly strong food and drink lineup
In short, it’s not just a concert. It’s a takeover. And yet, unless you’re actively in that scene, it’s easy to miss just how big it really is.
Throwback to Rock on the Range
If Sonic Temple doesn’t sound familiar, there’s a good chance you do know it… just by a different name.
It was known as Rock on the Range, which was already a massive deal in the rock world.
The rebrand to Sonic Temple might be part of why it flies under the radar locally now. Same scale (perhaps larger), same energy, just a different name that hasn’t fully clicked with everyone yet.

Wait… This Happens in Columbus EVERY MAY?
Yes. Every May.
And we’re not talking about small indie acts playing a side stage somewhere.
Last year alone, Metallica played TWO completely different sets across the weekend. They even raised $100,000 for local charities, including $65,000 to the Worthington Food Pantry, and barely an eyebrow was raised.
This Year’s Headliners:
- My Chemical Romance
- Shinedown
- Bring Me The Horizon
- TOOL (which, for me personally, is worth the price of admission alone)
And that’s just the top line. The rest of the lineup includes huge names like:
- Sublime
- Megadeth
- Halestorm
- All Time Low
- Stone Temple Pilots
- Public Enemy
…and a whole lot more.
This is the kind of lineup you’d expect in Chicago, LA, or Austin. Instead, it’s happening right here in beautiful Columbus, Ohio

What It’s Actually Like to Go
Even if you’re not a die-hard metal fan, Sonic Temple is surprisingly approachable. Take this from me, who brought his 60+ year old dad to the Sunday night Metallica show last year. Yes, there are heavy sets and intense crowds… but there’s also:
- Multiple stages, so you can bounce between vibes
- Gourmet food vendors (not just your standard festival fare)
- Beer, cocktails, and local drink options
- Huge merchandise areas that run like clockwork
- Art installations and fan zones scattered throughout the grounds
You can go all-in and camp at the main stage for hours, treat it more like a wandering music-filled day around the stadium, or just show up for one of the headliners and bounce.
There’s a lot of flexibility in how you experience it, which makes it way less intimidating than people assume.
Plus, there are different tiers of experiences and passes that you can purchase according to what experience you’re looking to have, which you can find here.

We Should Care More!
Sonic Temple brings in visitors from all over the country (and beyond), which means:
- More revenue for local businesses
- More exposure for Columbus as a destination
- More opportunities for future large-scale events
And from a purely selfish standpoint… the more support it gets locally, the better the chances it keeps coming back bigger and better every year.
Because let’s be honest… having bands like TOOL, Metallica, and My Chemical Romance casually roll through your city is not something to take for granted.
Whether you’re a lifelong rock fan, someone looking for a unique weekend experience, or just curious what all that noise near Historic Crew Stadium is about, it might be time to actually check it out.
Or at the very least… stop being surprised when your windows start vibrating for four days straight.
