Here’s the rub… Columbus pizza runs the game in Central Ohio.
I mean, of course it does. It’s called Columbus pizza because it is widely accepted that this popular style originated here and, as expected, is the local favorite.
There is a lot to LOVE about Columbus style pizza.
For one, you almost never have to worry about the pizza being “floppy” or messy. The small, square slices along with the cracker-thin crust are much to thank. That means you can load up on toppings, cheese, and sauce without worrying about the integrity of the pizza.
But the truth is…
Good Pizza Doesn’t Start and Stop in Columbus
The notion that Columbus style pizza is inherently better than any other type of pizza is nonsense. It all comes down to personal preference.
Yet time and time again, there are posts that gain a lot of traction online claiming that Sexton’s Pizza is overrated, more so than any other pizza joint in Columbus… and it’s not close. Bad experiences are one thing, but this pizza joint is put through the ringer more than any other place!
Common complaints (as seen everywhere online) are:
- Not enough topping coverage
- Not enough cheese
- Being “burnt”
- Or just the classic “it’s overrated”
Here are some classic nitpicky complaints… maybe I’m biased, both both pies look pretty darn good!
What’s Wrong with Sexton’s? You’re Comparing It to the Wrong Thing!
What so many of these complaints fail to recognize is this: THIS IS NOT A COLUMBUS STYLE PIZZA. It’s not trying to be. It never claimed to be.
So when you show up to Sexton’s expecting a cracker-thin crust with wall-to-wall toppings, cheese, and sauce… you are setting yourself (and the business) up for guaranteed failure.
It’s perfectly fine if the pizza isn’t your style. But when you factor in the quality of ingredients and the end product, saying it’s bad or overrated is an objectively false statement.
YOU just don’t like it.
The barrage of online hatred Sexton’s continuously receives is overdone (unlike their pizzas which, unlike opinions on Reddit and Facebook, are perfectly charred).
In reality, if Sexton’s Pizza was located almost anywhere else (even major pizza Meccas like New York City or New Haven), it would ABSOLUTELY hold its own.
So here’s the REAL take: Sexton’s is UNDERRATED.
