Sweeney’s Walnut Street Tavern might be one of the most confusing places to find in Columbus… in the best way possible.
This Franklinton spot is a house that’s been turned into one of the best (and most secretive) bars in the area.
When you walk up to the historic building, it almost feels like you couldn’t POSSIBLY be in the right place. You’re walking down Walnut St surrounded by old homes that look like they’re straight out of the intro of Full House (tall, skinny, and full of character).
Then it sneaks up on you. All of a sudden, you’re walking up the stairs onto the front porch… and it feels like you’re about to walk into a house party. And honestly, you kind of are. Except, instead of a kitchen table and a living room, you’re stepping into a fully stocked bar. There are Pickleback shots, a huge collection of records, TONS of Malört (some would say too much Malört), and one of the coolest vibes in town.
Head upstairs if you want something more quiet and intimate, or go out back if you’re looking for a totally different vibe that feels more like a friend’s cookout.
No matter where you end up, at the end of the night, you’ll walk out of Sweeney’s and think:
“Yeah… I’m definitely coming back here again.”
