If you’re like me, you were shocked to learn that Columbus is home to a fully-intact section of the Berlin Wall.
But what’s even wilder is that it’s not tucked away in a museum, hiding behind bulletproof glass and infrared sensors.
As one of the most significant pieces of history in the last 100 years, the graffiti-covered tower of concrete is hidden in plain sight on Capital University’s campus in Bexley, just outside the Blackmore Library.
While the graffiti has faded in the nearly 40 years since the Wall’s destruction, the bullet holes from numerous escape attempts remain.
A plaque on the “clean,” graffiti-less side of the wall states:
“The graffiti you see here was written by people whose lives were directly affected by The Wall. Now that The Wall is history, we ask that you leave it just the way it is.”
And then, hauntingly, it goes on:
“The one side of The Wall is empty of graffiti because it faced the ‘death strip.’ Anyone caught in that area could be shot without warning.”

Formerly a symbol of division, this section of the Berlin Wall now tells the story of perseverance and the unrelenting ability of humanity to unite despite all odds.
This piece of the Berlin Wall is free to visit on Capital University’s campus.
But we urge visitors to respect the wall and what it now represents…
