This course introduces abstract painting as a process of exploration rather than representation. Working with color, line, shape, texture, and movement, students develop both technical skills and an individual visual approach.

Over eight weeks, guided exercises build foundational skills in mark making, color relationships, and composition, supported by a consistent sketchbook practice for experimentation and reflection. Early sessions include discussion of historical and contemporary abstract artists and their approaches. Beginning in Week 4, students shift toward independent work, developing personal abstract paintings through techniques such as collage, layering, and surface development.
Each class includes studio work, group discussion, and informal critique in a supportive environment.
By the end of the course, students will have:
• A sketchbook documenting their process
• A series of exploratory studies
• One or more developed abstract paintings
No prior experience required.
