If you grew up in Southwest Columbus, Zamarelli’s Pizza Palace was surely a staple in your home.
Many locals describe it as “a Friday night tradition” and an innovator in what is now known as Columbus-style pizza.
But now, Columbus pizza must live on without this staple leading the way, as Zamarelli’s has officially closed its doors for the last time.
Dating back to 1963, Zamarelli’s was the brainchild of Andy Zamarelli. He used the recipes his mother took with her when she immigrated to the U.S. from Italy in the early 20th century. In 1991, Tina Zamarelli-Middendorf, Andy Zamarelli’s daughter, inherited and ran the business with her husband, Jack.
Tina and Jack ran the business and held up Andy and his mother’s legacy for over 30 years before announcing their retirement and, with that, the closing of Zammy’s.
Upon the announcement of Zamarelli’s impending closure, Grove City natives both near and far made it a point to hit up the joint for one last slice of Zammy’s, with lines reported being several hours long… talk about leaving a mark on your customers!
Thanks for all the memories and good eats, Zamarelli and Middendorf family. Enjoy retirement!
